South Boston - Halifax County Museum1 - 2 p.m.
Dr. Shirley Faulkner-Springfield, Adjunct Professor of Writing from North Carolina Central University will give a presentation based on her journey to uncover more information about her African American heritage.
Through intense genealogical and historical research, Dr. Faulkner-Springfield discovered that her great-great-grandfather, Friday Faulkner, was enslaved for a period of time in Person County, North Carolina and Halifax County, Virginia. Once this discovery was made, Dr. Faulkner-Springfield made it her mission to search for more information about the life and ancestry of Friday Faulkner.
In April 2018, Dr. Faulkner-Springfield published an article titled “Oh My God! He Was A Slave!” in the edited collection Serendipity in Rhetoric, Writing, and Literacy Research. She reveals, in her article, the connections between the African American Faulkners of Person County today and the first white Faulkner immigrant who arrived in the American colonies in 1622.
