Gift Shop Volunteer

If you like working with people and have experience in retail then the museum would like to talk to you. Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:  The gift shop is open from Wednesday through Saturday from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM.

Events Committee

If you enjoy and have skills and talent with planning fund raising events we would like to talk to you.

Display Committee

If you enjoy and have knowledge of local Halifax County, Virginia, and United States history and the arts and are willing to do research and help with creating new displays then the museum would like to talk with you.

Do you have a passion for local history and all mediums of art? Are you looking for a creative way to give back to the community and you have a few hours a week to spare? Volunteering at the South Boston-Halifax County Museum of Fine Arts & History may be just the place for you!

Reception Volunteer

Does this sound like you?

You have a pleasant and welcoming demeanor and you’re always wearing a kind smile. You love interacting with people and you have a knack for making everyone feel welcome.

Expectations:

  • Greet visitors upon arriving to the museum
  • Answer incoming telephone calls and provide general museum information
  • Direct visitors to requested locations of the museum
  • Occasionally assist with general office tasks

Display Committee Volunteer

Does this sound like you?

You’re a team player who doesn’t shy away from hard work. You have a keen eye for creative detail, and you can make a lot happen with limited materials and a short amount of time.

Expectations:

  • Help plan exhibits using the museum’s collections and other materials elsewhere
  • Help assemble and disassemble displays and exhibits

Your forte lies within the realm of organization. You enjoy creating order and using technology to do it. A big job isn’t daunting to you, and you’re not afraid to get dirty.

You fancy yourself an amateur sleuth, and you’re pretty darn good at it. You’re a big fan of history and mystery, and you enjoy hunting for information to solve the latter.

  • Assist customer interested in researching their genealogy
  • Help organize and maintain the museum’s genealogy collection

Hospitality Committee Volunteer

Does this sound like you?

You understand the proverbial notion about the quickest way to a person’s heart. You enjoy serving others, and your flair in the kitchen is how you do it. You love special events – they’re just another way for you to share your latest culinary creation!

Expectations:

  • Prepare and provide refreshments for museum events
  • Help with the set-up and take-down of tables for public functions

Sales and customer service is your specialty. You enjoy making people happy, and you do that by sending them home with a bagful of souvenirs. You’re responsible with cash and other monetary transactions, and you know how to stay organized in a high-traffic area.

  • Man the gift shop during museum hours
  • Help maintain proper inventory control numbers
  • Help merchandise stock items to promote revenue growth
