Park Explorers’ Outpost (Teens & Adults) – Radical Raptors

October 6, 2018 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Free

Join a park ranger of the Staunton River Battlefield State Park on Saturday, October 6th to discover the secrets of the raptors in Halifax County. Raptors, such as eagles, hawks, and owls, are large predatory birds that use unique adaptations to survive. The ranger will have a presentation about the raptors in this area and an activity available to children 13 and under from 12:30 pm – 1:15 pm and for ages 13+ from 2:00 pm – 3:00 pm.

Unlike typical songbirds that can often be found easily, raptors are a little more elusive. However, learning about their habitat, calls, and ranges, can help one successfully find a raptor or at least hear one. The ranger will share facts, photos, and sounds of these beautiful birds that call this area home.

You will also have the unique opportunity to dissect an owl pellet (similar to a cat’s hairball) and find out what makes up an owl’s diet first hand. A microscope will be provided to get a closer look at the bones found in the pellets. Piece together the bones and discover what animal the owl had for dinner.
